Traveling from ohio to new zealand someday, maybe even moving there.... any advice??

I do not agree with the first answer - New Zealand has actually changed since the Vietnam War and is a civilised and modern country.
Definately visit first. I WOULD recommend driving around by car. New Zealand is still quite a big country - you can not do it all in one day. If you have a car you have the freedom to see off the beaten track places - not all public transport access's these areas. You need to allow about three weeks to see it all.
Visit both the North and South Island. See all the cities - if you want to work here one day you will probably end up in a city. The main cities in order of size are Auckland (North Island), Wellington (North Island), Christchurch(South Island), Dunedin (South Island) and Hamilton (North Island). There are other cities but not as big. Visit all of these cities - each has their own uniqueness about them.
The North Island is more populous with about 3 million people living there - the South Island has only 1 million.
The South Island is the scenic island with tons to see and do. Agriculture is NZs biggest industry followed by tourism.

Highlights in my opinion in New Zealand in no particular order are:
Bay of Island at the top of the North Island

Rotorua in the North Island - famous for maori culture and it's thermal activity.

Napier - a city with fabulous art deco architecture.

Nelson in the South Island - niceeee place!

The West Coast of the South Island - beautiful with glaciers and rain forests!

Christchurch - a nice English city. Do the Tranz Alpine train trip to the West Coast from there. This is a fabulous railway trip. You can do it return or one way but if you have a car and leave it in Christchurch, you should do it return.

Dunedin - a great smaller city with great heritage and wildlife - you can see a castle, old homes, see yellow eyed penguins and royal albatross's. Also has a Cadbury chocolate factory and a beer factory for tours - both great. Do the Taieri Gorge Railway - a great scenic train trip. This is a return trip and is really popular. You get to see scenery you will never see from the road.

Queenstown - the adventure capital of New Zealand - lots ot do if you like the adreline rush and it is beautiful.

Wanaka - great little town - so beautiful.

Te Anau - a great small town where you can base yourself to see Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound - both must dos.

Stewart Island - a small slice of paradise and unspoilt.

my mate is from youngstown or "yompton" ohio as she calls it, she has just visited me in new zealand and absolutely loved it and wants to move here too, so there ya go, straight from the mouth of an original ohioan, hehe

Yes !! Don't plan to do it by car. The best advice I have is for you to thoroughly research this proposed move. Two young men from our town, whose father did not want to see his sons drafted and sent to Veit Nam, moved to New Zealand. Work was scarce even though both were craftsmen,the amenities were not comparable to the States and they were looked upon as competitors. Their overall experience was just tolerable.
