There are few countries that I would feel safer in as a lone woman traveler, than NZ. There is a really low crime rate, it's easy to get around, the people are really friendly. It is also really easy to meet other women travelers and partner up, with the extensive hostel system and large number of travelers. As long as you use common sense and don't hitch hike(hitch hiking is very common in NZ, but, I don't recommend it for a single woman), you should be fine.
I lived in New Zealand for a year and traveled much of the country...so, I could give you different itineraries, based on your amount of time there. But, not knowing this...her is what I recommend:
In April, it will be well into fall and pretty chilly. But, not too rainy. If you like to hike and ski...get yourself to the South Island immediately. Visit Queenstown and Wanaka for ski and scenery. Check out Fjordland and the West Coast glaciers for sheer beauty. Wellington(on the southern tip of the North Island is a cool city to visit, as is Dunedin).
If you would rather have milder weather. Check out the Bay of Islands on the far north tip of the NOrth Island...this area is beautiful and as tropical and NZ gets.
I hope that this helps. NZ is an amazing country that is very travel friendly/easy and the people are great. You will have a wonderful time no matter what you do! Good luck!

You will have a fantastic time!!! it is so safe - do it!! On the North Island go to Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Lake Taupo, Wellington(the museum is fantastic) on the south island visit Franz josef, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Dunedin, Lake Tekapo (just to see the colour of the lake!), Christchurch!!
Hope this helps!! Also when you travel, there are so many people in the same boat, that you are likely to meet up and make friends! |

The West Coast of the South Island is amazing, the scenery is what we have been told is some of the best in the world! It is very safe in New Zealand! The crime rate is very low and if you join a tour group your bound to find some more japanese tourists!
Good luck! |

you should be fine, especially in tourist towns/rural areas.
South/West Auckland is pushing it. |

Heya!
Yes come to Christchurch (where i live!). Thts gr8 you've heard so many good things bout us kiwis lol.
I reckon its safe BUT if you visit Christchurch DO NOT go out in the city at night time alone ok?
I dnt want to scare you but just dnt.
In april you should expect cold weather so bring warm clothing.
Man I make NZ sound bad right now dnt i? Its not, honest!
We're real multicultural so heaps of Japanese ppl to help you out |

You should go on a bus tour with others to see NZ, and they cover all the fun and best tourist places in NZ... it is the safest way if you are alone. You can book this with the travel agents in NZ, House of Travel (they are throughout NZ)...see website below and they could book your flights here also etc. You then have a local travel agent to support you if need to change or make extra travel plans. They can advise you as to what would be the best trip for you. Have a very happy and fun trip! :) |

There is no mugging, and very low crime rate over here.
Travelleing alone is very very safe and most people are very helpful and friendly |
