Ways I can protect myself?

I am a single woman living alone in Auckland, I like to think that I live in a generally safe area but just the other day my neighbor had an intruder in their house and I was wondering what are ways I can protect myself against someone? I would try martial arts but my life is quite busy at the moment. I can't buy pepper spray or anything can I?

I live in Gisborne, New Zealand and i know exactly what you mean! Someone has tried breaking into my house(I'm 15 but don't live alone)

What about buying a dog? That's how me and my family keep ourselves safe. We have a Huntaway(Farm dog) and a boxer. You should buy a dog cos that's the best option especially living in this country they have certain laws. You could still get in a whole lot of sh*t for even assaulting an intruder. If you do get a dog from like a shelter or SPCA choose a big dog that's atleast 8months.

Get an alarm kit and get it installed around your house and security lights aswell. Security lights are really cheap now so shop around for them and get someone to install it for you.

Goodluck.

Getting a dog is a good idea, but if you don't have enough space, just put a 'Beware of the Dog' sign on your mailbox or something.
Also, keeping hedges trimmed and away from the windows is a good idea.

I think it is illegal to have pepper spray here in NZ, but it's not illegal to have Impulse or something! Keep one of them (a nice strong smelling one) by your bed. Can you imagine that in your eyes??! :)

Every female can be a victim. Be careful and try not to worry about it.

pepper spray is illegal.
make sure your home has a good house alarm, and i'd suggest buying a dog too.

if an intruder does come to your home, don't try to fight them otherwise youll end up dead.

Keep a couple of size 13 men's work boots out the front to make it look like you have a big boy friend.
Get a dog...A big dog.
Close all your windows when you sleep.
Put some good male friends on your speed dial.

get a dog. if an intruder hears a dog, chances are that they would leave and not try to break in. get a big dog like a german sheppard or something. put extra locks on your doors and windows. put motion sensored lights around your house.

Make sure your house is fully alarmed & you can put the alarm warning stickers on the door as this is a deterrant for any intruders. It is also a comfort to have a dog. Not only are they a great deterant but can also be a great comfort. Make sure your windows & doors are always locked when not at home. Perhaps a join/start a community watch programme in your neighbourhood. If you are really worried they sometimes have self-defence workshops over a day or so that could show you some great techniques & can fit around a busy lifestyle. Hope this helps :)

Extra locks on the doors can benefit.

A dog would be helpful also.

At Harvey Norman (electrical store) they have 'panic' systems.
Where you have a bracelet or button in your home that sends out a panic request. You can set it to call police, your neighbor friend etc.
Police would be best and you programme it to call them.
(it has to be setup with police too)

Thats an interesting question. Food for thought: the more you help others in your life and the community, the less likely you are to have something bad happen to you.

Why can't you buy pepper spray. I bought a small thing of pepper spray and i feel lots better, you could also get a taser. well at least you can in the US. Guns are way to scary for me, but it seems like everyone has one.
