and yes i do live in New zealand and given that i have lived in both the north and the south island and been to pretty much every city, town and everything in between yes i do consider myself a pro, lol - don't take the fact that you couldn't understand when someone said 55 degrees they meant fahrenheit out on me!! hahaha
August is the last "official" month of winter so it can sometimes end up with warmer days but can also sometimes be the coldest month of winter. The good news is you can expect relatively few rain days around Christchurch and Queenstown in winter.
as mentioned by all the answerers definetly pack some nice warm clothes, light long sleeved tops would also be advisable for the "sunny" afternoons that could occur, pack some decent footwear and nice warm socks too

Christchurch weather is incredibly unpredictable - except in winter, when it's ALWAYS freezing :P Take mostly warm stuff, but don't forget to pop in a couple of outfits more suited to milder weather because it'll be nearing the end of winter by that stage. Hopefully :) You won't be needing any tank tops or anything though, that's for sure! |

warm clothes like jackets, shirts, long pants depending on where you are from you may have encountered colder winter most of the world has colder winters e.g the america's most of asia except some middle eastern countries most of europe and especially the artic and antartic the average high for christchurch in august is 12 degrees and average low is 2 degrees some days get to -3 lows but does not get much lower than that but inland south island may get as low as -7 and their high might not even reach double digits and it will be a good change you will see some rain on your trip maybe snow as you go inland your chances will increase |

Crank up the heat in the camper van and you'll be right with shorts, jandals and a singlet.
Also pack a decent warm jacket, Scivvies thick socks, shoes woollen gloves, hats and scarfs. Oh and warm trousers

It will be cold, and you may even have snow so you will need thermal or merino wool underwear - you can buy merino in New Zealand and it is nice and light and very warm, but polypropolene is also fine.A warm jacket, gloves, hat and scarf would be useful, along with long trousers, boots and/or good sturdy walking shoes. Warm jumpers. Layers are excellent as it can be warm inside shops and restaurants etc.Warm socks are really essential as if your feet are warm you will be much more comfortable. http://www.holidays-in-newzealand.com/new-zealand-weather.html

We can get a lot of rain, so you need waterproof gear.

VERY VERY VERY warm stuff i was from down south and this time of the year its really cold, if you go to www.msn.co.nz it will show you a bit about nz, its been snowing recently in my old hometown which is 6 hours away from chch, RUG UP!!!!!
Take jeans, lots of socks and hoodies/jumpers!! you will need it!!!

thats the very max, a high of about 12 all this week in chch.
