We don't know where go to live?

Me and my boyfriend would like to move to New Zealand, but we don't know where!
We practice kendo, and we have seen that in NZ there are only few places where we can do it: Auckland, Waikato, Lower Hutt, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Invercargill, Otago.
What do you think about it? Which city must we choose?
I prefer the south island... and I am thinking about Christchurch. How is that city? And what's about the cost of life here?
Thank you very much! ^^
Additional Details
*We already know where kendo is practiced in NZ: look here http://www.kendo.org.nz/HTML/clubs/clubs.html :)

*Now I'm working as sous chef, and I'd like to continue with this job. But I have other working experience... I've studied languages at the high school and tourism at the university. My boyfriend has studied computer science at university (something like "multimedia intelligent systems")

*We prefer not very big cities like Auckland. We really love nature and we would like to excape from the city when we don't work :)

*I think that we allow us the first weeks as a vacation. So we can travel around and visit your country ^^

THANK YOU FOR THE ANSWERS ^^

I've lived in Nelson http://www.nelsonnz.com for 20 yrs and Christchurch for a year - and would pick Nelson anyday!
Better weather, (most sunshine per hours per year) not as busy/crowded, obviously less population, but much nice scenery, beaches and so much to do in the region. Nelson would also be cheaper. Really depends on what type of job you are going for too, Christchurch would have more job opportunities being bigger in size... but yeah, again I would pick Nelson.

Overall the South Island is much nicer than the North.

- Edit - ok since you are a chef try work at The Rutherford Hotel in Nelson http://www.heritagehotels.co.nz/nelson/

Plenty of 'nature' around Nelson - on one side (both an hour and half drive) you have Golden Bay http://www.tourism.net.nz/region/nelson/nelson---golden-bay/ and Abel Tasman National Park http://www.abeltasman.co.nz and the other side Marlborough http://www.destinationmarlborough.com . I go back once a year to visit these areas - they are so great.

I pick Christchurch over Auckland to live in. But be wary of the fact that the temperatures there are much lower than in the north. I think that Auckland is too crowded and commercialised. Invercargill and Otago are too cold for my liking. Hope this helps.

I read that Auckland was one of the best places to live. I'd go there.

Avoid Auckland at all costs!! - It is very expensive (on an NZ scale) to live, and there are far nicer places to be.

Technically I am from Dunedin, but I would probably suggest Nelson in the Malborough Sounds - it is very beautiful, warm, and plenty of places you can go to "escape the city"

I live in Auckland and it is a very mulitcultural city - you'll find that kiwis are very welcoming of all cultures - for example we have celebrations for Diwali (Indian I believe), Chinese New Year and several other celebrations because the face of New Zealand is changing. The greatest work opportunities will be Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch - Christchurch is very hot in summer (today it was 33 degrees) but very cold in winter - like it snows. It won't snow in Auckland and summers are usually high twenties to low thirties and winters are usually around about 10 - 15 degrees. Also, you will nearly always find Kendo places in every city - try www.yellowpages.co.nz and search Kendo - it will show you everywhere in NZ that lets you practice Kendo. In general, Wellington and Christchurch are cheaper in terms of houses and cost of living but I prefer Auckland - although I can't really speak for Chch - I haven't been there but apparently it is very nice - it has an amazing cathedral

Auckland is more cosmopolitan than Christchurch . Look at the population figures . Otago is country farms and small towns .
The North Island is warmer Flatter and more populated.
The south has more spectacular scenery , and open natural space, Mountains etc. Cost of living must be similar , but housing would probably be cheaper in Christchurch than Auckland. Try to Google craigslist and compare any adds . Don't decide first , look around travel is easy and fun . Learn about the whole country first and then pick. Its not always about money, sometimes the smell of the air, the feeling you get there . the people around you, is what does it ,

From all the answers above, you have a wide choice, however, I'm going to be different and recommend the Waikato region- Hamilton, to be exact. I have friends there, it's a lovely city and only an hour away from Auckland, ample university / college opportunites, jobs are not too difficult to find, the people are great, safer and cheaper than Auckland. You can also have a look at Cambridge or Ngaruawahia, both towns situated just outside Hamilton. I lived in Wellington and really loved it. All the best in whatever you decide.
