Christchurch tends to be CRISP....rather than windy and rainy.... in that you get clear nights so gives heavy frosts but still and calm for the most part.

Having said that you do get those days if a southery storm heads up from the south which is not pleasant......Apart from a bit of smog, it will give you stunning views all around and nice days in general.

this link will tell you all about NZ weather, seasons and average temperatures
http://www.tourism.net.nz/new-zealand/about-new-zealand/weather-and-climate.html
August is still part of winter however its often a bit warmer than June or July but theres no real telling.
As for rain, Christchurch has a relatively low average rainfall you shouldn't expect to get more than a day of rain, if any. its not very common for it to rain for days on end in Chch
Also Chch isn't known to be windy, except for the nor westers which bring muggy hot days in summer.
If its frosty overnight then your pretty muich guaranteed a sunny, clear but crisp day
enjoy your time here :-)
