www2.stats.govt.nz old stats - I think prob around the 1/2 mill by now.
As for earthquakes in the Wellington region? This site is good. I often feel a slight tremor and check it out.

I hope this gives you some help in your project. One thing I'd like to mention is that NZ had the 2 most violent earthquakes in the world a few days before the big quake/tsunami in Indonesia. Lucky to be a sparsely populated country.
So very sad for all the people who had family or friends who died. |
