Wellington is situated on the bottom of the North island. You can see the South Island from certain parts of the North Island (Khandallah, Karori).

I don't know what 40s is, but I can tell you that Wellington is in the southern part of North Island.

KAL H answered with such precision that no other person has been able to give you.
His answer probably came directly from Google Earth.
Look it up for yourself at www.googleearth.com
It will even show you the height above sea level of the various suburbs and places of interest.
If you don't check it for yourself, accept his answer as the only one worth accepting.

I know that 45 south is just north of Oamaru in the South Island, so its around 40oS I guess.

Wellington takes up right along the bottom of the North Island. It is a 3 hour ferry trip from wellington to the top of the South island. It's a really nice city with lovely shops boutique style a cable car that takes you up to a lookout of wellington and to the most superb botaanical gardens. Well worth a visit ,if you strike good weather.
