I have lived in Christchurch on and off for years!! I keep returning because it offers so much ( for me it was universities etc) and shopping...compared to what I have lived with...its great there!!
I have visited Wellington several times and stayed there for a couple fo weeks ( in the winter).....it has some nice harbour views, but I did not like it as much as Chch....people say Wellington is more compact that Christchurch which is spread out over a wide area...but I still found it takes a long time without a vehicle ( they do have the best rail system in the country which is a definate advantage).
I like the climate in Chch better....ok in winter it gets bitter and very frosty, but the summer times are hot hot hot and its less windy than Welly ( its not known for being windy wellington for nothing)....I also beleive Chch is now the second biggest city in the country now, taking over from Wellington, so I feel its a more "happening" city than Wellington. |

Christchurch is known as the garden city and is nice and flat so you can bike to work.
There are nice beaches and Christchurch is close to 2 of the finest Salmon and Trout fishing rivers in the world. |

Christchurch defiantly. - The garden City.
So much more to do in, and around Christchurch and also the surrounds than Wellington.
I lived there for a year in the early 90's, my brother lives there.
When ever I fly to NZ for hoildays I always choose to fly into Christchurch rather Auckland or Wellington.... it's just better all round. |

This question is asked with such monotonous regularity that it's a wonder it sometimes doesn't appear as 2 consecutive questions.
It is unanswerable of course, but as you see, many try.
What one person likes, another dislikes, there's no accounting for taste.
(I will be taking a cut and paste of this reply to use in the future when this question is asked once again, as it will be. Pasting the same reply will save alot of time in typing.)
That was a pasted answer, but, as someone says, it depends where you are happiest.
