I would say Auckland, not because I know it's safe there but because I keep hearing freaky stories about muggings, bashings etc all happening in Sydney.

I went to both with a tour group but on our "downtime",I felt much safer in Sydney.It's also much prettier.Auckland is so commercialized and rushed. To say Auckland is like saying Texas,it's more like a state than a town.Outside of the business district though,there are many beautiful places to see.
