We are who we are, there are a lot of idiots in our race and by no means does it say that we are all like that. It just means that we are stereo typed. Take us as you see us. judge for your selves.
Our culture on the other hand is like any others it unique to us, it is who we are and you cannot distinguish the person from the culture they are interconnected. |

I'm Maori, although I do have other bloodlines, I'm proud of my Race as everyone should be with there's, It is a close family orientated culture, Although there has been and still is tribal tensions between some areas.
I can remember years ago heading to my tribal land for the first time in years as an adult, calling into a family elders home and asking permission if I could stay for a holiday, I had to quote my lineage to the land and him, I got permission to stay in a batch right on the coastline, having people I was related to but didnt know turn up the next morning with Crayfish,Paua and wanting to have a hangi(traditional way of cooking food in the earth) just blew me away, It was the first time i had felt really connected to my people from that area(having been raised in a different Place).
well thats one of my happy storys about who i am. |

I actually find maori culture facinating from pre-european tribal warfare to post-european land wars, the treaty of waitangi, an agreement between early maori and european is often a great source of debate which still goes on today.
The preservation of the maori language is thriving te kohanga reo (a type of creche for 0-6yrs) solely teaching te kaupapa maori (the philosophy language tradition etc) now taught in some mainstream schools right through to degrees at university and beyond.
Maori have campaigned long and hard to be recognised in their native land and it is hoped they continue to strive long into the future.
In saying that however today, maori and there culture have typically been view or stereotyped into negativity, from the maori point of view it is preservation of there heritage others view it as outdated and absurd - there is also stigma about how maori live and abuse of the welfare systems, this may be true for some not for all....
preserving maori culture is priority for a dedicated few and I for one am pleased my children are learning all they can about maori there culture and tradition.
I disagree 'wabby' opinions will always differ between honouring the treaty and being hypocritical there will always be a divide between maori and non maori on that matter (what do cell phones have to do with it??) like I said it is only a dedicated few that wish to preserve the culture, hypocritical.... I think not, generalising..... again I think not. |

To tell you the truth, quite violent.
The maoris have had a history with tribal wars before white man arrived in New Zealand and today, they are at the lower end of the food chain in terms of economis.
However, there are many succesfull maoris in New Zealand. Many maoris have a really kind heart that you do not find in any other race |

You really can't generalize about the Maori Culture. I know people who could careless about their Maori Heritage and then there are those who are really passionate.
I believe that some of them are a bit hypocritical. They want the foreshore, but they also want their European cellphones etc etc. You can't have the best of both worlds!
There are more Maoris in the North Island. |
