If you're flexible, able to book a fair way in advance and travelling alone you'll need to go a long way to find anything cheaper than the Nakedbus company. If you hit it just right you can get fares for as low as NZ$1. Even if you don't get the best price, they are always very competitive. E.g. I had a quick check on the Auckland to Hamilton run and over the next couple of weeks they have fares down at NZ$9; Auckland to Wellington, I saw fares down at NZ$22 during the same period.

As for flights keep your eye on the Air New Zealand 'grabaseat' site. They advertise specially discounted flights each day on a first come first served basis.

It's such a short distance, I would suggest train or bus. For the time it takes to get to and from the airports in both Auckland (Mangere) and Hamilton (Rukuhia) you could have reached your destination direct by road.
Wellington is another story. It depends on whether you want to see some of the country, or not. If the former, then definitly bis or train. Otherwise it's a one hour flight versus a ten hour drive.

It depends. If you can get a stand by flight ticket, that would be cheaper. Otherwise, I'd say train.

Auckland to Hamilton catch a bus.it leaves from the back of sky city.be around $20 nz dollars.and Auckland to Wellington catch a plane.i think QANTAS has a speical on at the moment.$60 nz dollars.book asap though

A 1 hour flight (plus an hour each end getting to and from airport) -- take a standby flight on NAC- ooops Air New Zealand, but it could mean hanging around the airport for a day.
A 10 hour drive. The overnight InterCity coach offers best value, but you can get up to 60% off the regulare price on daytime trips by booking well in advance.
Or the train, a 12 hour trip, very scenic, but check out fares, the cheap seats disappear very quickly.
Hitchhike, still at least 10 hours, probably twice that, with a driver of unknown competence and mental stability.
Take your pick.

There are numerous bus services so shop around for the best prices. A good site would be Intercity, they have really comfortable coaches for a long journey.
