What's the food like in NZ? |
What's popular? And what kind of food is considered native NZ cuisine? |

Depends where you live in some cases - like in Auckland there are sushi places everywhere, especially Downtown, it's extremely popular, but it isn't when you go outside Auckland. I'm not sure why that is as it's all kinds of races in Auckland that love sushi, not just Asians.
It's hard to think of native NZ food, all I can think of is types of fish that you can't get anywhere else (alot of these have Maori names & it's possible you can get this fish elsewhere in the world but maybe it just has a different name). And our NZ salmon is superior to salmon from the Northern Hemisphere. This is because we don't have sea lice like the North does, so we don't have to feed the salmon antibiotics, which makes our salmon tastier & more healthy to eat.
You would think there would be Maori & Polynesian restaurants here but I've only ever seen one in Downtown Wellington. I guess non-Polynesian people don't like that kind of food much.
We have a great NZ chocolate brand called Whitakers, it's been going since 1896 & the chocolate is made here. Also NZ ice cream is good. All dairy products taste great.
All food tastes better here as we are agricultural experts & have great soil. Meat is great quality here, really tasty. Lamb in particular is apparently much higher quality than any other country. In the UK & Australia I thought their meat was disgusting.
Pavlova is a really nice NZ created dessert (although Australia claims they invented it, but we dispute this). I think it was named after a visiting Russian ballet dancer, many years ago like in the 1930's or something. I think a chef created it specially for her or some such story.
Also our wine is internationally recognised & has won many awards overseas, even in the wine obsessed France.
Over summer we have wine & food festivals which are great (but full of really drunk people which may not be your thing & maybe you are not yet of legal drinking age - 18 years old). The best one is the Marlborough one in the South Island & then there's the Devonport one in Auckland & the Waiheke one (Waiheke is an Island in Auckland Harbour). There are also bus tours that take you around the wineries in each district of NZ & those are always fun to go on. Some of them are situated on some great, sprawling properties with nice scenery. |

Food is simply awesome and for a truly authentic New Zealand dish, don't listen to the others.
You need:
Roast Moa:Roast a Moa
Fern Shoots:Get a fern, chop off the new growth. Eat it.
Captain Cooker Kebebs using Kiwi beaks as skewers.
That should just about do it. A truly exotic experience! |

You cant beat a good pie.
Other than that, I guess Fish n Chips, Pavalova, I'd say a good steak or lamb but thats not really an NZ 'authentic' meal. |

um new zealand produces good quality meat so if you ate out at a restaurant there would be pretty standard like beef, lamb and pork and chicken dishes.
um there is quite a variety of ethnic restaurants and foods around now, sushi is quite popular
pavlova is like our national dessert its kinda like a meringue with cream and its real good
fruit is pretty much always available, kiwi fruit and feijoa are kind of typically nz
we have most of the usual fast food chains, like mcdonalds, pizza hutt, kfc etc |

Well i think we have good seafood? ( my parents own china town seafood restuarant in christchurch so check that out if you want lobster!)
Lots of ppl eat Fish n Chips and fast food....
BTW- kiwi fruit isnt actually native to New zealand. IT IS NOT AN NEW ZEALAND FRUIT. The other name for it is the chinese gooseberry and i think it was brought over from england |

It really is not much different than other western countries. The indigenous people (the Maori) do wonderful 'in the ground' (called hangi) cuisine, where a hole is dug, a fire built and when the fire dies down, stones are put in. They heat up and the food, traditionally wrapped in leaves, is placed on top and the soil replaced. When it is cooked it is dug up. It is really nice. I can't think of anything you can't get overseas. Our food is very fresh tho' and we have wonderful fish. |
