What's with this "Auckland is the big apple" nonsense?

Before I start I want to catagorically state I'M NOT TRYING TO BADMOUTH AUCKLAND!

The other night I was in a bar when I overheard some girl from jaffa-land say "Auckland's like New York". I just about spat my beer back out again when she soon followed with "yep Auckland is the big apple" (some Sydneysiders were taking the piss I think). I had to cut in and tell her that;

I've been to New York, NY USA TWICE and I can't think of a city in the entire world that is LESS like 'the big apple' than Auckland, New Zealand.
I can't think of ANYTHING the two places have in common beyond speaking the same basic language. Even the bridge is completely different.

I asked her exactly how is Auckland the 'big apple', she said "oh you can get anything you want there. The place is what you make it". I then told her how you can't get a subway from the centre of Auckland, which she had no comeback to.

I've seen this written online too and just shook my head. Now I'm hearing it spoken, and I'm concerned about it being used in ammunition against all kiwis in trans-Tasman banter.

Please can someone tell me: is this some retarded saying that Aucklanders have adopted since I've been away? because if it is PLEASE stop saying it.

I repeat: I'M NOT RUNNING DOWN AUCKLAND! I'm just saying how dumb this phrase is. In fact I consider similarity to New York nothing to aspire to or be proud of.

If anything, Auckland is more of a California type city than New York

Well, Dorkland does have more than alot of other towns in NZ.....but it's still full of wankers!

dookie
lol yeah ive been to New York aswell and it just doesnt compare. Maybe shes talking about Auckland as a big apple in the context of the size of the city, as in its new zealands biggest city?

JitterBug
HAH. I'm not against Auckland or anything, but I see it as one giant suburb. It is in no way like New York, and the whole "it is what you make it" thing is bull!

New York is known as a multicultural place, with every type of person to be found there.
Auckland... not so much. Sure, there are all walks of people in New Zealand, but Auckland is populated primarily with Asians, Pacific Islanders, Europeans and Pakeha (aka NZ European).

She just sounds proud of her city though, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I do agree with you though, that statement is ridiculous.

Jenstar
I live in Auckland and i've never heard that saying (thankfully). Maybe she was just referring to the fact that Auckland is like most big cities around the world. I found when I was travelling that most major cities end up being pretty similar in essentials really.

TwiggyNgati
Im a Jafa and I've been living back in Auckland for over a year now and I have never heard it. Thats just daft. Maybe she is one of those people who has never been outside the North Island?...or even Auckland.
But if I do ever hear anyone say it i will give them a good talking to..... and a punch in the chops for good measure.
Just for you, ok.
