If you ask me, it's getting into a terrible state!! :-) The city centre has been ruined and they are fast turning what was once rightly referred to as the 'Garden City' into the 'Concrete Jungle'. The areas around the river and the university are still very pleasant though.

Apart from that, it is in the province of 'Canterbury' (marked in blue on the linked map of New Zealand below). The map also shows you where Christchurch is located within Canterbury.

Most people use the abbreviation 'chch' when referring to Christchurch, but there is no commonly used abbreviation for Canterbury. Unlike America we don't have that many provinces (states) to warrant the use of abbreviations.

If you're asking because you are sending mail to someone, it is not the usual practice in New Zealand to put in the province. Just Christchurch will do (we only have one - I think) but we are encouraging the use of post codes (like the American zip codes). There's a link below for that too.

Here in NZ we have provinces and Christchurch is in Canterbury. (Cant.)
In spoken abbreviation a person is referred to as a Cantab.

I agree with Johno----it's in a terrible state.
The Mayor is a self-professed expert on roads and roading, and has recently resigned as Mayor to take up a job on Helen Clark's committee on roading, so he must have convinced her too that he was a wopcacker.
All the roads and footpaths of Chch are riddled with pot-holes. Some pot-holes even have pot-holes in.
The Council put up signs saying Road Works, when anyone can see that that portion of road no longer works.

Only have provinces in New Zealand and its the mighty CANTERBURY!!! Christchurch is abbreviated to Chch all the time, canterbury...hmmm well its usually Canty I guess...most people do the Chch instead as people know what it stands for.
