Ok this is from a Kiwi point of view.
Yes...the accent is similar to Australian, but distinct to those livining in either country....as there is great rivalry between the two, and we like to think of how distinct we are, I know I felt offended the 90% of the time I got called Australaian and the 5% I got called South African when I was living in England!!
I know I got asked by a student ( I'm a teacher) why I was white......she thought Nz was a tropical island...and very similar to Australia....I have a feeling in some ways that is the view of some people...an isolated island on the other side of the world.
I know its 24hrs by plane here from the UK....but hey its not THAT bad....I watched movies all the way there and back ( personal screens).....and while sleeping is something I do very little on planes, you do fly at times...like night where you want to sleep.
I tried to tell people what it was like here, and while they came back with the "England in the 1950's"comment...ok we don''t have some things...it takes longer for things to get here ( or we miss out) and other things.....we do have running water and electricity in most places now....ha ha. While others feel we are isolated, I don;t really get that, we watch the news which is more international than I felt I got in the UK ( and problably less political too)...as you see this day in and out, you don;t feel isolated....Thats why I guess so many want to go travelling and what the hell, its an adventure.
I think most kiwis are pretty proud of NZ, and thats why we hate being called an aussie and why we ask "how do you like the place?"a lot....you know small man syndrome...the scenery is on a world scale....I found this out in reality when I travelled round Europe....while we do not have the sense of history that they do there....the natural beauty is hard to be beaten. I had heard the mountains of Slovenia were stunning, but I thought the ones here in NZ were better and more breathtaking.
I think a lot of Kiwis are laid back, but hey there are jerks everywhere in the world, but I know compared to the Brits, we are a bit more open and willing to go the extra mile. Lifestyle is important here and we try to get out and about and see the place ( I admit I still have a lot to see tho!).
I would say a lot of people would think its quiet.....ok there are less people here....Its nice to get away from people ( thats one things about living in the UK...I could not get away from people!!!!!! Walking down the street on an average is like here at Christmas time.....
Anyway thats a personal view of kiwiland from a kiwi.....by the way we call "kiwi"the fruit...kiwifruit, kiwi is a bird ( but you don;t see many in nature and very few have seen a live one) and Kiwis are...us |

I asked a New Zealander once if he was Australian - I was just judging by his accent. I thought he was going to kill me. He said, "How'd you like it if I asked if you were Canadian?" I thought he was a bit over the top, but I guess people in America aren't very aware of New Zealand and he was sick of people calling him Australian. Or maybe he was just an ***. Anyway, I would like to visit New Zealand. I don't know much about it, but maybe I could find that guy and ask him if he was from Australia again. |

It's a place I still want to visit. There is a great variety of interesting and different wildlife there - some seen nowhere else in the world except perhaps in Australia. There's still a lot of virgin wilderness and I think it would be a wonderful place to explore and camp out. |

Firstly Mark had better start paking his bags as there are at least another 120 countries but I suppose the English still have a limited view of the World.
New Zealand is large and very diverse, it looks small as it is parked next to Australia (London is closer to Moscow than we are to Australia) but it is 10% larger than the UK and about a 20th of the population havein just toped 4m people.
It is possible to sail on the ocean in the am and ski in the mountains in the afternoon. You can drive in under 3 hours from regions that get 300mm (1 foot) of rain to areas that 6m of rain (20 feet) in a year. One of the few places I have been with such contrast. I have being to over 60 countries but really rate NZ
Good, cheap, safe place to travel and well set up for travellers. |

For me it's the only country left in the world that I have yet to visit (I've done 58). A place so laid back, with beautiful scenery and practically unspolit (apart from Aussie tourists!!). To many of us in the UK (after reading the Holiday press/watching TV Holiday programmes) it appears that New Zealand may be in many ways be stuck 20-30 years behind the rest of the alledgedy civilised world, which when you think about is no bad thing. Everything appears to be done at a more dignified pace - there's no rush, and if you're late - so what?
Oh, the people - never, ever heard a bad word against them.
The only bad thing is that's so far away - 20 hours + - from the UK. That's probably why it seems as good as it does.
The link may help, but if you're not in UK, just forget about everything after .com
Failing that, why don't you post you question on the NZ version of Yahoo, and ask the locals for their opinions?? |

It's been a number of years since I visited NZ but I loved it.
The pace of life is slower there.
People are friendly and the country is beautiful
If you have ever been to parts of Canada the south island is much like Banff Alberta and the northern island is much like northern Ontario Canada. |
