The worlds first controlled powered aircraft was flown before the Wright brothers but lacked the media coverage back in that time therefore it has never been credited that New Zealanders were the true pioneers of flight. New Zealand also invented bungy jumping, the paper clip, and split the atom (pretty impressive for a nuclear free country) |

Bungee jumping, the water sprinkler, electric fences, the propeller less jet boat and the Navman GPS, to name a few. |

One of the first technologies to be exported from NZ was the postage stamp vending machine.
Although invented by a Chinese, the gold dredge is a NZ invention.
Nearly all the basic movement controls used on aeroplanes were invented in Temuka; very little of the technology of the Wright Brothers was of any use to flight development.
Again invented by a Chinese, the mass production of butter in dairy factories was an idea developed in Taranaki.
Answerer "CB" , please note that the 'Pearse Brothers" did not invent flight. It was Richard Pearse on his own. He ended up in a mental hospital because his neighbours regarded him as a nut case.
He live on a farm at Waitohi, just out of Temuka, and his memorial is there on the roadside.
I regard it as one of the greatest achievements of any New Zealander, but the world has never heard of him. |

New Zealand entrepreneur and daredevil AJ Hackett opened the world's first commercial bungy site in 1988. In June 1987 AJ bungy jumped illegally from the Eiffel Tower. AJ Hackett now lives in Paris.
# New Zealand brothers Davis and Andrew Akers created the world's first Zorb, a unique adventure activity involving a giant plastic ball, a slope and speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour.
# New Zealand farmer William Hamilton developed the world's first propellerless jet boat in 1953. He went on to invent the hay lift, an advanced air compressor, a machine to smooth ice on skating ponds and the water sprinkler amongst other things.
# New Zealand scientist Baron Ernest Rutherford was the first in the world to split the atom in 1919. He was awarded a Nobel Prize for his efforts in radioactivity.

# In New Zealand you can find an artificial surfing reef at the surf town of Mount Maunganui.
# In Wellington a proposed artificial reef at Lyall Bay is said to make Wellington a top surfing spot, by boosting good surfing days from 27 to between 118 and 142 each year. |
