What are the best Geothermal places in Rotorua? The best of them all please.? |
I am going to be in Rotorua for 2 days. One day i will be going to White Island. Please advise of the best place in Rotorua to see Geysers, mudpools etc. i don't have time to see all of the parks. I am throwing up between Orakei Korako geyserland, Waimangu and Te Puia. I am going to have a car with me so transport is not a problem. I have limited time, so i need to go to a place that covers all of the major attractions. |

Visit the Whakarewarewa Thermal Area. Here, you can see Te Puia, Cooking Pool, Leaping Frog Mud Pool, Pohutu Geyser, Prince of Wales Feathers Geyser, The Brainpot, Lake Waikaukau, Wahiao Meeting House etc..

You're doing the right thing in going to White Island. Go by boat or helicopter so that you can actually walk within the crater.
Remember this volcano is active, it may stink, it may throw rocks at you, and it may be difficult walking on the new ash.
As for other areas, give Whakarewarewa a miss - far too commercialised.
Give Te Puia (Hell's Gate) a miss, there's not as much goes on there as at the other places. The Waiotapu Park is the most colourful and easiest to walk around, (to see the Geyser, you must be there by 10.15 am; allow about 30/35 minutes drive from town) and the Waimangu Thermal Valley has the most recent history and ongoing activity. If you see one or both of these places, you've seen about as much as is available.
After you've done your days sightseeing, check in at the"Polly Pools" (Polynesian Spa) within the Government Gardens and enjoy the natural hot water spas.
Take in the Aix massage as well. Soak your worries away!
Don't do the 4wd trip to the top of Mt Tarawera - it's not good value for money, but if you get the chance to fly over it, then do so. A trip to the Buried Village will give you the full story of the Tarawera eruption.

From my personal experience Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland is a brilliant place to see all the different types of geysers that the region has to offer. It is a very short drive only 27km south of Rotorua and has an easily accessible car park. The tracks are very easy to walk through and the park has a stunning array of colours for all the different geysers and mud pools. Not very expensive to get in either. Hope you have a great time in Rotorua and Bay of Plenty! |
