I have a 14 hour layover and was hoping I wouldn't have to spend the whole time in the airport!

You don't really have a lot of time - you will need to allow for travel time - how long it will take depends on the time of day.Our traffic can be pretty bad.You will have to be back for check in 2 hours prior to departure.

Take a bus or shuttle into the city centre. There is a lot to do. You could go up Sky Tower for a good view if it is fine.Have a look around the waterfront area, the Maritaime museum is very interesting, it is right on the waterfront.Maybe take the ferry to Devonport and back. That would take about 40 minutes.Or a bus out to St Heliers. It goes along the waterfront to give you a bit of a look at Auckland city. You could also catch the free link bus and do the circuit for a quick look.

If you wander up Queen Street to Wellesley St you can turn left and you will come to the Art gallery, which is on the corner of Albert Park. There are buses that do a circuit to the museum, Parnell Village, Parnell Cathedral, ect. You can get on and off as you want. You need a pass for those.

Have a look at http://www.holidays-in-newzealand.com/auckland.html for more information

If 14 hours including the trasportation from airport to city and reture, then you probably only have few hours only.
Then, if you like easy day in Auckland city, then you can just take the airbus from airport to downtown and walk to domain and walk to the pier to enjoy the port view where you can enjoy the upcoming summer sunshine there just sit down the bench by the dock.
Or you can join the free-visiting bus for one day tirp which you need to contact with YHA days before coz it's easy to get full on the package everytime, but it's FREEEEEE~~~~so lots of people will join that to c Auckland.
And some landscape, like sky tower or Albar Park (can't make sure if it's the name) or walk on Queen St. where you can pass some square for you to enjoy the beautiful day...

Hmmm 14 hours... You could go shopping, or go into the city and have a look around there. You could go to a beach if you wanted, if it's not going to be night time.
