What are you talking about? Australia IS a country. In fact, it is the only continent that is just one country, the smallest continent.

I think you might mean how many STATES are in Australia.

We have 6 states:
New South Wales
Victoria
Tasmania
Queensland
Western Australian
South Australia

and 2 territories:
Northern Territory
ACT or Australian Capital Terristory.

The ACT is a very small state, which pretty much has Canberra and National Park. When they were trying to decide which city would be the capital of Australia, Sydney and Melbourne were fighting over who would get it, so to solve the problem they built Canberra right in the middle of the two, and then created the state around it so that NSW would not have the honor over any other state.

Dude you posted in the wrong place...You're asking about Australia but you're under New Zealand...Australia is it's own country, you might do a lil more research on this at your library or online...Good luck

there are no countries in australia but it is made up of 5 states being new south wales, victoria, south australia, westen australia, queensland, and 3 territories being northern, tasmania, australian capital

there are an independant country by themselves but their proximity to papua new gineau and torre straits sometimes mean they get included

I wonder if he/she meant "states."

It is the equivalent of asking in a Canadian category how many countries are in the United States of America.

Perhaps you should show him or her how to use Google Maps!

Australia is a country on it's own. It is also the smallest continent in the world. They have the opposite seasons as we do in North america. Winter in summer and summer in winter. ( christmas is in the summer)
