What do Aucklanders think of the doco I'm linking? |
It's called "Auckland, city of cars". And as you can guess it's about how Auckland is poorly served by public transport and has only a very rudimentary passenger rail system.
It's good food for thought and reinforces my opinion about the excuses given for this being bogus (look at Wellington whose rail network serves the 4 outer satellite cities all with a population of low density).

I don't think you'll get any argument from anyone that lives in Auckland. Traffic here is beyond a joke. The trouble with Auckland is that no-one here thinks ahead - even the Harbour Bridge was virtually obsolete the day it was built (hence the clip on lanes). Many years ago we had a Mayor, Sir Dove Meyer Robinson, who did think ahead, but he never could get enough support to build the public transport system we needed. Auckland couldn't afford to build it alone and no-one else in NZ wanted to help pay for it (stupid really, because Auckland drives a huge amount of NZ's economy).
The new 'super city' concept for Auckland may help. At least it will get rid of some of those ARC idiots who thought Aucklanders would flock to see that has-been Beckham kick a ball around.
Personally I avoid the southern motorway like the plague. Peak hour traffic on it would drive Mother Teresa into a homicidal rage. |
