Well I was born there but now live in Australia (the so called "lucky country").
I, like many Australians, believe New Zealand is heaven on earth. It is a land of friendly people, fresh air and great drinking water.
The thing is, most people I know here in Australia think New Zealand is a boring, one raced country (Infact, some don't even know the difference between a European New Zealander and a Maori!).
I know for a fact that New Zealand is a very multicultural nation. Not many people know this because all they seem to think of New Zealand are sheep and hobbits! Haha.
I personally love New Zealand and would one day like to move back there. I thing I love about it most is you can get around the whole of the North Island in like a day!
In Australia it would literally take me 8 days driving to get to Perth (I live on the Gold Coast).
Many people also correctly think that New Zealand is a rugby-mad nation which it is!
The All Blacks are one of the world's greatest rugby teams.
So yeah, that's my thoughts on New Zealand as well as other people's around me.
Thanks for the question :) |

I think it's sweet as. I think of "Flight of the Conchords." I think of the kick *** band Steriogram. I think of Pavlova. I think of Phil from the Amazing Race! I think of the All Blacks!! I think of the haka! I think of "the warehouse, the warehouse, where everyone gets a bargain!" (sorry....that jingle is like tattooed to my brain). I think it's freaking awesome.
I LOVE NZ!! My dad & I spent two months there in 04 & had an amazing time. I adore Kiwis. They are so kind & generous, interesting & quirky. They're genuine, mellow, cool. Even the JAFAs! So many people invited us to dinner or played tour guide to us. They were just so lovely. I love that they aren't as materialistic as ppl in LA (where I live) are. I also totally love that they are more unique & individualistic; people didn't seem to just follow the herd as much there. And they didn't patronize me just because I was a kid! (I was 12 then)
I'm an aspiring musician, so I LOVED the coffeehouse culture in Wellington. OMG. Awesome! It actually inspired me to start singing at local places when I got back to LA.
The scenery of the South Island was knock-yo-socks off awe-inspiring. It's just so pure and beautiful. We hired a car & did the whole Island over a course of a month. I love the Maori culture of the North Island. I had the most amazing time surfing (and making out w a hot surfer boy!!!) in Raglan. : )
I loved the food. I'm a vegetarian, so I totally appreciate that there were so many creative options. I fell in love with Hell. : ) Yummy.
So...all in all, yep, I think NZ ROCKS! |

I have lived almost everywhere, so I feel I can speak for the perspective of a few different groups.
I get the impression that New Zealand is universally seen as an enviable country, a sanctuary almost, from the madness of the rest of the world.
It certainly always has been that for me.
I live there now, and my opinion of it has not faltered.
It is that kind of place, maybe alongside some others like certain countries in Latin America (Costa Rica, Uruguay), Mauritius, and a few EU-owned territories like Tahiti and Guyane Francaise.
A kind of remote capsule of ideal civilization. |

I from the USA and New Zealand is at the top of my list of countries I plan to visit. Sometimes I daydream that we will move there-lol. But I would have trouble picking between the northern and southern portions. Every Kiwi I have met (about a dozen) have been kind, charming, out going and polite. I think only good things! |

I have family in New Zealand on both the north and the south island. I've been almost all over the country.
Long sandy beaches, big skiing areas, a dessert, glaciers, sailing, trekking, a beautiful wildlife, wild stories of killing possums lol, a rich cuisine and much much more - no wonder why people think it's a beautiful and rich country. |

In HK and China - we are loved. In USA they think we are great, Aussies are envious and the Brits think we are the luckiest nation on the face of the planet. The Turks view us like a brother (thanks to Galipolli). I live locally and travel extensively. |

In the words of Fred Dagg.."We dont know how lucky we are in this country....we dont know how lucky we are".
(I absolutly love that song...and oldy but a classic! Even our prime minister makes an appearance in it :D)

I love NZ, the culture and the people.
As in any country not everything is perfect, but its close nit and supportive. NZ seemed to come together as a people to morn the loss of 6 teenagers and 1 teacher in a canyoning accident. Everyone around the country was effected by it in some way or another. Its a great example of how NZ'ers are I think, highlighting the amazing nature of the people in this country I love so much. One where everyone is family, and trult care for one another. |

I am an Aucklander but lived overseas for years and I would never live anywhere other than New Zealand. As Auckland gets bigger with more traffic and stress, etc I'm now thinking Wellington is the cool place to live so might move there.
On my travels I found Germans idolised NZ & NZers, it is their dream to live here. And 2 years ago I took my holidays in the Cormandel after the school holidays & the whole Coromandel was full of Germans & no one else! They were all dying to move here but found it hard to meet the criteria with immigration. When I was in Germany (travelled extensively all around Germany) I found people hostile (except people in Hamburg) but people would change completely when they realised I was a NZer. Hostile business men sharing my train compartment would become super friendly and helpful once I pulled out my passport to show the on board customs officer. People would give up their seat for me in train station waiting rooms only after they spotted Neuseeland on my luggage tag & prior to that they were hostile. Quite interesting. Almost like you're a star or something.
I lived in Sydney for 3 years about 10 years ago & frankly people were very racist to NZers (well to everyone really, especialy non white people but particularly to NZers). But when I've been on holiday to Brisbane, Byron Bay, Melbourne, etc in recent years it seems they think we're kind of cool now & every Aussie I met seemed to have been to NZ or knew someone who was or just had. I think maybe because our fashion industry (Karen Walker, etc that appear at Sydney & London fashion week, etc) and our film industry taking off that they think of us differently now.
I don't care if loads more NZers are leaving here for Aussie for more $$, etc. I couldn't live there again, it's just not our culture. I totally respect creative people like Taika Waititi, Peter Jackson, etc who say they won't leave here for any amount of $$. It's not about money, it's about loving living here and being part of your own culture.
I love to travel, but I always want to come back and yes we are incredibly lucky to live here. I think NZ is similar to Scandanavia in a lot of ways, the scenery, kind, friendly, respectful people (although we have much more crime than they do) & governments with good social policies & human rights ethics, etc. So to me the best places in the world to live are Scandanavia (especially super friendly Denmark) & New Zealand. |
