What does the word "bloody" mean?

My geography teacher is from New Zealand, and he said "that's bloody brilliant!" I've heard the word "bloody" used before in the same manner, by a British friend of mine, a few times, but I have no idea what it means. And it never occured to ask about it till now.

I'm an American, by the way.

Bloody - One of the most useful swear words in English. Mostly used as an exclamation of surprise i.e. "bloody hell" or "bloody nora". Something may be "bloody marvellous" or "bloody awful". It is also used to emphasise almost anything, "you're bloody mad", "not bloody likely" and can also be used in the middle of other words to emphasise them. E.g. "Abso-bloody-lutely"! Americans should avoid saying "bloody" as they sound silly.

It's just an expletive...a far more polite one than saying f*cking. It's not really classed as offensive anymore.

More information about it here...

That's a British intensifier. Instead of saying something like "f*cking hell or that's f*cking brilliant, they use bloody to make it seem less offensive.
