What is Devonport like? |
I'm going to be visiting there soon and I was wondering what its like there and what there is to do. I've looked on the websites and stuff but I'd like to hear what people think who live there or have visited before.
Is there any activities you recommend or thing to go and see?
Thanks. |

Hiya, you may have read about Mount Victoria and North Head, extinct volcanoes that have the most incredible views of the city and the harbour.
Mount Victoria is a short walk up the main road of Devonport (the road with all the shops on, Victoria Rd) from the ferry building and is a bit of a climb i'm afraid, but totally worth it. If you have a car, it's no worries at all.
North Head is along the waterfront from the ferry building and has tunnels and big guns and cannons that were used in the war or something. You can walk down some stairs to Cheltenham beach too.

If you find some cardboard on either mountain you can slide down the side if you are game, it's a bit of fun.
There is Devonport Museum and also the Navy Museum, both free to visit.
Another beach is Narrow Neck, which is just along from Cheltenham and on the way to Takapuna

The main road of Devonport village has some cool little shops and cafes, if you do go to North Head you could stop in at the Masonic Tavern on the way for a drinky or two. They also have fab bistro meals, really yummy and fresh (:
That's it off the top of my head.. hope you enjoy, its really beautiful. |

Devonport is a lovely place. You can catch the ferry over from the city. You definitely should go up and around North Head. You can walk along the waterfront from the ferry.............enjoy the craft shops opposite the clock tower.Carry on to the end, then up the mountain. Or catch a tour bus that runs from the ferry between 10.00am and 3.00pm each day.If you go to the left (facing up) you will find the path that takes you around the edge of the mountain. You can go into the tunnels, from this path. There is a stone kitchen recently turned into a small theatre where you can see a film of the history of the area. The views are beautiful both on the walk and the 360 degree panorama from the top.You might like to go up Mt Victoria too. A slightly different view. If you go down Church St you wiull come to Cambria Park which is nice.Have lunch at Ice It Cafe........very nice food and ambiance!
Cheltenham Beach is lovely, at the foot of North Head. The shops have some nice craft outlets and other interesting shops for nick nacks. I like the Art By the Sea opposite the wharf.Wander up the street one side and back the other. The Devonport Chocolate Company has decadent handmade chocolates.
You'll enjoy your day.You could have a ride in the horse and cart if you are getting weary. The Navy Museum has just been opened and sounds very interesting. It is just outside the Navy Wire fence(left at the wharf)
Have a look at http://www.holidays-in-newzealand.com/devonport.html for more on Devonport. |
