It's like a big sleepover! Maraes always seem to have like an endless supply of mattresses and everyone camps out on the floor in the same room (usually). Don't break any traditional rules, eg taking your shoes off before you enter the building, and don't sit on any tables, cos it's pretty much the most insulting thing you could ever do to a Maori. Have fun! x

It is very communal, like being with a huge group of relatives. A very family type event.

It is sort of interesting... they will make you do activities and there will be a lot of food, and 'Kaimoana' :) You can't wear your shoes inside. I think it is a good experience to have once.

It's very religious and you can't really understand a word they're saying. There are nice carvings around the marae, but also many, MANY boring speeches and songs that are a necessary ritual of letting people in to the marae. Some of the games schools organise are fun though.

If you're staying the night, it gets really creepy in the dark.
