What is it like to live in New Zealand (auckland)?

Some people say that the country has few people. I'm afraid that the city is very quiet and dull.. Is it so? Thanks for the info..
Additional Details
I'm planning to study there precisely at Massey University. Is the university located in the center of the city? Is it easy to feel homesick in New Zealand? Because I have been living in Singapore for 3 years and I find it quite good than America. Is it really different with other metropolitan cities? Which is better Monash University (Melbourne) and Massey? Is Massey famous for its business school? How much salary for a fresh graduate get paid? I have never been to NZ and because of that I'm really worried and afraid. Where should I live as a student? At University's dorms or at any home stay with a guardian? Please give me the complete info.. Thanks a lot.. I really appreciate it!

Hi there,

Auckland City is not dull. I can't believe someone said that!!!!

I am a New Zealander and I live in Auckland. There are lots of things to see and do, and the people are very friendly. You will have a great time. Auckland is a busy metropolis, a bit like Sydney in Australia.

Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand and we have over 1.5 million people living here in Auckland. Auckland used to be the 10th largest city in the world in land area.

New Zealand is a beautiful country. New Zealand has it all - great city life, great shopping, great food, beaches, mountains, countryside, lakes, outdoor adventure, native forest, fresh clean air, sheep, cows - and no snakes - cool ehhh :-)

Auckland has a moderate climate - Daytime high's of 35 degrees celcius in summer down to lows of 10 in winter is about normal. It doesn't snow in Auckland.

If you are coming to Massey Uni (Auckland Campus) its in a newish part of North Auckland called Albany. Lots of new shops and lots of people. Massey is a well respected University in New Zealand with a very high standard.

You would probably be best to stay with a family who can help you to find your way around at first. Dorms are OK too but then you have to be pretty outgoing and make friends quickly.

The average salary in NZ is $35,000 NZD - about $23,000 US. You can earn higher and lower depending on skills and qualifications. You can't work in New Zealand on a student visa. Getting a work permit here is possible, but not that easy. About as easy as us getting a green card to work in the USA.

Interest rates and house prices are very high at present. Auckland is the most expensive place in NZ to buy a house - about $300,000 to $400,000 on average. Renting is so much cheaper. A lot of students get together and rent a house. Can cost about $100NZD a week per student + expenses.

New Zealand is very similar to Australia - without the snakes and poisonous spiders. :-) I love holidaying in Australia but I love living in New Zealand.

I don't think you will be lonely here. We are a very multi-cultural country and there are lots of overseas students.

If you have anymore questions, I'll pop back and try to answer them.

All the best - God bless :-)

I'm an American from California, and I've gone to New Zealand twice already. Auckland is O.K but you run out of things to do quickly, unless you have the $$$ for the rocket boats and all that extraordinary stuff. There is an IMAX theater there, a Burger Queen (which is hard to find, but tasty), and a few other things.

I have only been to the North Island. I hear all the fun stuff to do is in the Southern part of the South Island. I've been from Top to bottom on the North island, and basically, it's like this: You can see everything in a city/town within 3 days, after that, it gets old, fast. Unless you like clubbing and drinking, then you'll get bored.

ANOTHER thing, everything seems to close at 5pm. The only things worth doing are clubs (which I am not into) and that's only on the weekends!

I hope this helps!
