Traditionally Waiheke Is was a bit of a hippie place, where people went to be creative and to get away from the city. There were a lot of artists and ecological farms.
Now, Waiheke still has those original locals, but now there's a lot of Aucklanders who have built big expensive houses on the island, using it as a weekend home or commuting from the island to Auckland.
While Waiheke still has a good creative community, newer land owners have started producing wine and olive oil. Waiheke is now known as a day or weekend trip from Auckland where you can sample the island's wines and olive oil; spend a few hours in one of the nice vineyard restaurants/cafes; check out the shops for local artists' goods; and to hit the beaches.

Waiheke Island is in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand, 17.7 km (about 35 minutes by ferry) from Auckland. Of the Hauraki Gulf islands, it is the second-largest (after Great Barrier Island), the most populated and the most accessible by regular ferry and air services.
Waiheke is the third most populated island in New Zealand, after the North and South Islands.
The island is 19.3 km long from east to west and varies in width from 0.64 km to 9.65 km, with an area of 92 km2.
It is very hilly with few flat areas, the highest point being Maunganui at 231 m. The coastline is 133.5 km including 40 km of beaches.
