There's a train network but its not super-extensive (some really scenic sections though). Coaches run between major towns but if you really want to see NZ I would suggest hiring a car.

Depends on how much you are willing to spend... Maybe hiring a caravan and touring the country is good. There is plenty of tour buses that travel up and down the country.. Or by train is good.
