Invercargill is right at the bottom of the South Island and Wellington is at the bottom of the North Island so at some point your going to have to go for a swim.
Ok I'll be serious now - you can probably make the trip up to the top of the South Island in 2 days (1 day if you are used to travelling long distances) then you'll need to jump on a ferry to get to Wellington |

well, 3 hours to Dunedin, 4 1/2 to Christchurch, about another 5 to get to Picton, 3 hours Ferry, and there you go. if you want, you may get there in the same day, I guess, but make sure you check the time table for the ferry
