July and August, and into Sept; wet and windy, maybe the odd frost. A temp of 15 would be considered a hot day.
Sep, Oct, November; Gradually warming up, fewer southerly winds with rain, more fine days (calm days after a spell of southerly weather, but with northwesterly winds most of the time) with high temperatures going up to perhaps 22 degrees.
One of the answerers mentions the skiing.
He's kidding.
There is no skiing in or near Wellington.
The closest skifield would be Turoa, about 5 hours away, and by the end of August the ski season will be just about finished. |

I live in Wellington. Grew up here and continue to live here.
It does get frosty in Wellington. Heck of a frost at times. The city itself (as in Te Aro or Pipitea) however, all other areas will. Certainly. 2 years ago there was even a tiny bit of snow in karori -although that's not normal!!
10 -15 degrees is probably normal in about June to August. It gets warmer in September - November but be aware that rain rain rain will happen.
I suppose the major thing is that you are looking at quite a long period so you are going from winter to Spring.
The comments about houses are absolutely correct. Even in houses with insulation and heat pumps (reverse cycle air conditioners) you will find that the houses are a lot cooler than overseas. This means that in many cases, even when the houses is insulated it isn't necessarily warm - it just isn't cold. If that makes sense.
There are, however, some absolutey stunning days. The type of days which you wake up and notice that the sky is blue and the city looks fantastic. |

Cold, Cold, Cold with a chilly wind.
Starting to warm up come November - if you are lucky.
I gew up in Sweden so used to cold but have never been so freezing as in NZ. The insulation in houses are quite poor so everything is damp and drafty. |

I'm something of a Wellingtonian myself so listen to me and ignore the others.
July is midwinter so it's very cold and wet and NZ houses are very crap so you'll feel it. Wellington also gets a lot of wind so the cold can cut right through you if you don't wrap up. But as it is by the sea there is NO frost or snow unless you head up the Hutt Valley.
So it will be a mixture of mild and miserable, but it will be pretty cold.
November is the end of spring and beginning of summer so the weather is completely different to July. It should be sunny and pleasant with the odd bout of rain. It might get hot but never too hot as there's always a breeze to refresh you. |
