What it mean when a "family has borders"?

What it mean exactly when a "family has borders"?

Is this always (or at least usually) presumed to be a family where certain people aren't talking to certain others, etc? (such as a son not talking to the father)
Additional Details
Maybe I meant "boarders", but the line I read that prompted me to come asked the question was: "We were pretty poor back then, and my family had borders."

As has been mentioned, and due to your clarification about "...my family had boarders":

It simply means they had people pay to stay in one of their rooms.

It's still a pretty common thing to do actually. If you look at a lot of hotel booking websites which include Bed & Breakfast and Hostel accommodation you will see they often refer to full board or half board.

A boarder would often pay a set figure for their room, expenses (eg phone calls and electricity) and had some or all of their meals paid for. It's not uncommon now in houses where families don't want 'flatmates' but do want someone to stay to perhaps top up a mortgage.

It means that a family has someone living with them and paying rent. They usually have thier own room and help with the phone, power etc. The family may do the cooking etc.

The way you have spelled it, it means there is a border around the paths, fences and other internal garden divisions. These are usually made up of small annual or perennial herbaceous plants.

However, if you meant to spell it with an A, then it means usually that the house has long term paying guests who contribute financially to the running of the home. It has nothing to do with the behaviour of members within a family.

The above examples show that to make sure people know what you are talking about, you must be careful with your spelling.

Added: As a result of your post script- I confirm that paying guests helped augment the house income. They would receive a bed and bedding, the use of the shower/bathroom, sometimes access to the laundry (or the landlady may do their laundry for them) and perhaps 1, 2 or 3 meals a day depending on how much board they paid.
