What part of the south island has the nicest countryside in your opinion?

Where do you think the nicest rural areas to live in New Zealand are? The greenest and most mountainous and generally lovely? Is Southland a nice region? Please forgive my ignorance!

Southland is very popular for dairy farming these days. Where you live depends on how cold you like it in winter, and whether you want to be able to ski and do winter snow sports. Queenstown would be considered a very nice place to live, so any area out from there is near mountains, very beautiful but does get cold in winter.Wanaka and surrounds likewise. However, they are also very expensive places for property.Maybe somewhere like Cromwell would be more affordable. You could check property and rental prices on http://www.trademe.co.nz

If you prefer a warmer climate Nelson and Blenheim are much warmer and have beautiful scenery and a lot of outdoor activities with the Abel Tasman National Park, lovely beaches, Nelson lakes nearby and easy access to the West Coast.

not me.
I would say Christchurch and surrounding land is very pretty and quite green, but if you like it a bit warmer it is very similar in the north island.
personally i prefer the south island though.

Arthur's Pass is gorgeous!!! It's a tiny little town in the middle of the mountains but we loved it. If you enjoy hiking, seeing waterfalls, and relaxing, it's a great place to visit. We had driven there from Christchurch and then went on to the glaciers.
