Here is a great link that will give a bit more info about New Zealands weather, it includes a chart with mean temperatures in each season in the main centres of New Zealand. http://www.tourism.net.nz/new-zealand/about-new-zealand/weather-and-climate.html

New Zealand is a beautiful country and i'm sure you'll have a fantastic time here!. The north island is definetly more mild than the south over winter but NZ has a very mild climate in general so don't worry the temperatures won't be too extreme over winter (especially up North) would be extremely uncommon for it to ever drop below 0 degrees celsius.

I would also say that NZ does indeed get hot! it can often be over 30 degrees in places over the summer months. Christchurch is renowned for its hot nor-wester days and Timaru (2 hours south of christchurch) reached 35 degrees this summer. The bay of plenty, not far from where you will be in Waikato is very warm and muggy and definetly a hot place to be in summer.
Hope this helps and have an awesome trip to NZ :-)

LOL, it never gets *hot* in NZ, although to someone from the UK I guess it might feel like it. When I was there, it was in the September-October part of the year when it was getting fairly warm. December-January-February were the warmest months. I still remember mowing the lawns on Christmas Eve, which seemed very strange.
In the winter, its moderate. Only in the very high altitudes is it cold enough to snow. It might reach 0C at night in the middle of the N. Island, and it will get up to 18C or so during the day. Rarely is it so cold you cannot wear shorts (that was our school uniform, we wore shorts year round).

hiya

im from new zealand and it starts getting hot in New Zealand around the same time that it starts getting cold here. If you are planning a trip to NZ try to plan it around October - March as these are the hotter months of the year - if you are wanting warm weather though it doesnt really get too cold there anyway

July= middle of winter. It will be cold. Like someone said previously the warmest months are December, January and February.
