Look at my answer to this question, which asked about bad suburbs for some more info.

Fendalton and Merivale are both flash areas and close to the city, malls and most of the private schools.
North Shore is a nice suburb, 15 minutes from the city centre, close to the beach/forest/golf course. Nice neighbourhood.
Sumner/Redcliffs are nice, close to the beach, a bit far from the city though and the traffic is terrible.

Fendalton Is very flash and up market, It Is also quite expensive.
Merivale Is quite similar to Fendalton.

If you are looking for somewhere that's laid back, non snobbish and great for kids then North beach Is a great place as the beach and Forest are right at your door step.

Parklands Is also very nice.

It really depends on your budget. I'm in Burnside, which is about 5 mins to airport and countryside, near several malls, with the usual array of shops and supermarkets and about a 25min drive in peak hour to the CBD. It could be expensive to rent here because the High School has an excellent reputation. It is also very handy to University of Canterbury and College of Education.
