Where can I live in Auckland that is near a beach?

Hi,

I'm coming over to NZ to work in Auckland. I don't really want to live in the city and would love to find somewhere near a beach (surf beach preferably) that is commutable into Auckland CBD. I am on a budget so don’t suggest any pricey areas :)

Thanks

Auckland is on an isthmus between two harbours and most people are very close to a beach. If you want to be walking distance you can live on the North Shore East Coast Bays, or the inner harbour, - Birkdale or Beachaven. The Eastern Bays is on the city side but expensive. Then as you go further south there are also a string of beaches. - Howick, Cockle Bay, Mellons Bay etc. However, a surf beach is a little different. The nearest is probably Piha or Muriwai, on the west coast.Commuting in Auckland is not that easy - the transport system is not really that flash, and the traffic is at gridlock, so the further from your work you live the more travelling you will have to do.

Unfortunately any area really close to a beach is going to be pricey, although near the water but not a surf beach you could look at areas on the North Shore such as Glenfield, Birkdale , Beachaven, or Torbay, perhaps parts of Browns Bay.Or on the other side out Howick, Pakuranga.

If you are renting you may find something in Devonport - it is an expensive area, but the odd well priced flat comes up. This is just a ferry ride to the city and right on the water.

You could look at the rental section of http://www.Trademe.co.nz to get an idea of prices and locations. If you are buying they also have houses for sale.

Good Luck

Anywhere in Auckland is near a beach, if you're on a budget then being walking distance to the beach is probably not an option. Waiheke Island is a good option, Onetangi is a surf beach and you can bus and ferry into the city although somewhere like Sufdale on Waiheke is probably cheaper and you closer to the ferry but still not too far from the beach.
