Where do i look to get short term/not expensive accomodation for approx. 6 months in new zealand.Near snow.??

Depending on that, you may not be able to come to NZ and stay for 6 months. Unless you are a UK or OZ citizen, you can only visit for 3 months at a time, and as a visitor you are not allowed to work here. You MAY apply for a working holiday visa, or for a work visa, but there are restrictions and requirements to each.

To apply for a temporary work visa unless you must have a job offer from a New Zealand employer, or have an occupation that is in demand here, or must be coming here for a particular purpose or event (not just to travel).

As far as working holidays, the NZ Immigration web site says "New Zealand has lots of short-term work opportunities for working holidaymakers. We encourage people on working holiday permits to consider jobs in the areas of agriculture, horticulture and viticulture (grape-growing). Working holidaymakers who are able to show they have worked in the horticulture or viticulture industries for at least three months could be eligible to obtain an extra three month stay in New Zealand."

The requirements/restrictions for working holidays depend on your citizenship. If you check out the website, it lists all the info. Plus there is another page which has links to working holiday job information.

You probably won't be able to work behind a bar or in a restaurant unless you have passed the national certifications, unless you are happy with washing dishes. Gotta have a barrista license/food handlers license/etc.

I wouldn't say it's 'easy money' but if you come during the harvest season, the orchards are always crying for fruit pickers. Right now they are advertising for help in the vineyards. A lot of places offer dormitory-style accommodations with the job. Otherwise, most cities always need rubbish runners, and manual laborers to work in the factories and processing centers.

As far as accommodations, backpackers and youth hostels are the cheapest way to go, short term--but if you are planning on a long term stay, it would probably be less expensive to rent an apartment - depend on the area you are heading. A fellow I know stayed in a backpackers for about two weeks until he found a furnished apartment, which is about 2/3rd the cost he was paying for a week at the backpacker place.

I'm not a snow sport, sorry, but you can check out the area around Wanaka and Queenstown in the South Island. There are lots of snow sporting opportunities there. I know people who ski and snowboard at Treble Cone and the Remarkables. Maybe you could do a web search on the snow sports, and then send letters (or emails) of interest to the places that capture your fancy.

If you want to go skiing you are better to move to the South Island, longer season, usually better snow. Most top fields in one place is Central Otago (Queenstown to Wanaka) but there are some really awesome lesser known fields out the back of Christchurch, which is said to be one of the few places in the world where you can go skiing in the morning and swimming at the beach in the afternoon. Rents aren't too bad in Chch either. Mt Hutt in Canterbury is usually the skifield with the longest season, sometimes into December (NZ summer), although with the climate the way it is who knows whats gonna happen. For Canterbury skifields its actually really cheap to live at Otira on the West Coast and travel for an hour through Arthurs Pass on a good road to a couple of really excellent fields. Easy money is bar or cafe work or fruitpicking/pruning work. Central Otago is a good bet, and not necessarily Queenstown either because thats really touristy and hence way more expensive than some nearby towns which are just as cool, like Wanaka or Cromwell. We've got a real labour shortage at the moment so try not to listen to yankiwi (their name implies a mastery of something other than nativeness), there are ways to get permits and we are crying out for staff, you don't always have to have cafe/bar certs, to be a bar MANAGER you do, but there's plenty of work esp if you've done it before and you can always wash dishes.

could try working behind a bar, if you here during snow season you could get a job at snow Fields/resorts. Cheap accommodation is the backpackers, www.bbh.co.nz should be able to give you some better ideas on pricing.
Good places to are queenstown(snow,bungy jumping,gondola,shotover jet), rotorua(Tourist attractions, mud pools and heaps of fun stuff, just search www.rotorua.co.nz) Taupo has the huka falls, Waitomo has glow worm caves, hope that's helped some.
