Trademe, car auctions, car fair, ( held each Sunday morning at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland from 9am to 12 noon), backpacker hotel noticeboards.
I would check out prices on trademe, ask for someone to meet you with the car. Car fairs are good - hundreds of cars and buyers getting realistic around closing time. You can even pay for a mechanic to check it for you.
Make sure you have a warrant of fitness (WOF) less than 30 days old and a current rego, Avoid turbos, diesels, boy racer and modified cars and old European cars and know enough to spot a car on its last legs.

i would check out the backpackers car market i bought a sweet van from there its been really good no problems so far, i will probably sell it there too. check out their website. just make sure you get a mechanical check on any car that you buy especially if the vehicle is over 10 years old, i hope this helps have a great trip its a beautiful country.
