Kiwifriut (Actinensis chinensis) is a subtropical cane and grows well in the warmer parts of the country.
The main growing area is in the Bay of Plenty.
Harvesting is in April/May and are picked unripe. However a Brix test is carried out prior to harvesting to determine sugar levels and no picking is done 'til the levels are correct.
So all kiwifruit in the shops now have been CA (controlled atmosphere) stored. They will ripen within a week or two of being removed from this environment. Ripening can be hastened by storing the unripe fruit overnight in close proximity to a ripe apple or banana. They are not necessarily soft when ripe.
All good greengrocers and supermarkets should stock them.
