Right now its Australia, they have elected a very liberal government and New Zealand has gone in the other direction electing a very conservative government, who are currently trying to undo all the liberal reforms of the past 12 years before they got in.

Not only that, New Zealanders like to think of themselves as all egalitarian and ideologically liberal, but NZ has some of the most restrictive laws relating to land use, including noise control which have the effect of making the attempt to have fun against the law.

It's also full of small minded and petty individuals who are a legend in their own lunchtime and like stomping on other peoples originality and ideas. In short, New Zealand is all nicey pie, but you get stabbed in the back a lot. The key to success in NZ is to conform, or to leave.

Australia, on the surface, is less openminded than NZ, but underneath they are way more in favour of individual liberty and accepting of differences than the average New Zealander.

Tim C has a very valid point about an ugly side of NZ culture.

But to answer your question;
In terms of politics and economic values I think NZ is more liberal. Although that liberalism is both left wing AND right wing.

In terms of social morays Australia. I've found average Aussies more open to and less tight arsed about new and different things. I think us New Zealanders are tragically narrow-minded.

EDIT: Gosh one thing I just miss about NZ are the narrow minded people who dogmatically support one political party like a religion. Like young Hamish here.
Oh wait... no I don't.

To Tim C : Look at the fantastic work labour has done in the last 9 years. Completely stuffed up our economy and forgot to tell National how much debt we are in. Ie forgetting to tell national that they had an extra thousand workers in the government sector. Our politics can get quite nasty. Other then some pretty stupid laws it's pretty relaxed

Oh and of course Labour's taxes are completely unfair [to people like my dad]
And then complain when doctors leave for australia
