Which Glowworm Cave is better - Waitomo or Lake Te Anau? |

All I can say is that the Te Ana-au Glow worm tour was developed as a tourist attraction using Waitomo as the model.
Personally, I would recommend you go visit the Waitomo Glow worms.

For Te Anau you take a long boat ride across the lake first. If you like that kind of thing, do Te Anau. It's much more expensive than Waitomo, and the trip is almost twice as long.
I loved Waitomo. However, I didn't take the boat trip, but rather the inner tube trip. I'm not sure if they still offer it, but if they do, definitely go for it. You get into wet suits and miners helmets, toss your inner tube in the river and float through the caves. |

Te Anau is the better one although there is also a good one (and far cheaper) at Waiomio, just out of Kawakawa.
Both these have one big advantage, they are not overrun by tourists.
For Te Ana Au Caves (to give them their proper name) you have to take a half day excursion as there is an hour long boat ride getting to and from the cave site.
Cave Tubing, or Black Water Rafting is available only at Waitomo. |

I would like to name another cave http://www.caverafting.com/ on the West coast of the South Island. These tours are eco-cave tours,so they don't distribute the caves environment.
I would recommend it as you can just walk through the cave to the Glow Worms if you don't want to get wet, or do the rafting if you want to float under the Glow Worms. If you do the Underworld Rafting they may take photos of you in the cave and on your tube.
If you are brave enough you could also do Adventure Caving.
