If you are looking for hiking in the north part of NZ then I can recommend walking from Russell in the bay of islands to cape bluff takes about 5 hours to get there and there is a cabin at the end, you can either walk back the same route or you can arrange to be picked up on one of the fullers boats.

Alternatively you could do the longer walk up to cape reianga, the very northern most point of NZ. The walk takes you along some impressinve coast lines and also along 90 mile beach. The walk takes a few days and camping equipment is a must as there is no huts on the way.

My favourite is in Tongariro just south of Taupo. which has day walks (one of the best in the world) 3 and 5 day loops taking in some amazing volcanic scenery hot pools, sulphor vents and amazing views! Plus it's where the scenes for Mt Doom were filmed in Lord of the Rings.

Definately Auckland, thats a must, try places like Rotorua, The Bay of Plenty and Wellington..

If you want to go off the beaten path, try driving up north from Auckland, sticking to the westerly route, and go to the Waipoua forest. This is where the giant kauri trees are. It's a very spiritual experience and you can do a lot of walking. The Department of Conservation has a campsite including cabins where you can stay cheaply. There are also affiliated lower-budget inns/lodges--ask for a brochure where there's tourist info. We did the forest, then took a ferry across the beautiful Kaipara Harbour and spent the night in one of those inns. From there you could go to the Bay of Islands (pricey!) Have a great time!

The best place to go is the Bay Of Island.

Rotorua was fantastic. It's perfect if you want to know more about Maori culture. There is a lot of geothermal activity and you can see the geysers. Also, visit the Agrodome, it was such a neat place to see everything from sheep to Jet boat riding. Another must see in Rotorua is the Skyline Gondola and Luge. It was so much fun.

The best place I think is near Russell (Bay of Islands) where you get the sea, the forest and surrounds

Plus its not far from Auckland if that's where you are flying to... a 3 hour drive by car (north) .. and a little longer by coach..

Coromandel Peninsula 2 hours south of Auckland or the Waitakere Ranges directly west of Auckland City. The good thing about NZ is that nature is right on the doorstep of the two major North Island cities Auckland & Wellington.
