Which city would your recommend to live in (in New Zealand)? |
I've always wanted to go to New Zealand...I don't know what it is that really intrigues me about this beautiful country!!! Anyway...I've finally made up my mind and saved enough money for this new "adventure" of mine.
I'm planning to go on a working holiday visa at least at first, to see how things go and if it's actually possible to stay there...since this is pretty much my only shot I want to do this right, so I've been looking and searching for information and what I'd really want to know is which do you think would be the best city to live in??? (= not too expensive, not too hard to find a job, find a decent apartment)
I was thinking Queenstown but I heard is way too expensive, then Auckland but it's also too expensive (this is what I read, I don't actually know how much it really costs to live there)...so I really have no idea what to do!!! Don't know anybody there!!!!
I have a ma in tourism and a ba in business and marketing and it would be great if I could end up in a place where it's easy to find a job preferably in the tourism sector (front desk at a hotel would be perfect!)
So, if anyone has some suggestions...I'd really appreciate it!!!
Thanks in advance :-) Additional Details Thank you all SOOO much for all your answers! I have a much better idea now on where to go but especially that there are so many beautiful places to see in NZ!!
Can't wait to go and (at least) visit all of them! :-) Thanks! |

As a beginner, you should consider Dunedin. Its rent is cheaper, it is a good town with ample facilities and nice people. Great way to explore the Southern part of South Island and the mountains, Queenstown, Milford Sound for getaways too, from Dunedin. Then at the same time, you should travel to CHCH, and towns like Oamaru, Timaru. While being in Dunedin and exploring the beautiful area, look out for cheap rental in Wellington. Stay in the city for the later 6 months, explore Nelson, and North Island, Hastings, Rotorua, Taupo, Auckland, on your schedule. But Dunedin is the best place to start. |

Personally Wellington is my favourite too. It's loaded with culture and there are loads of awesome local bands. The weather is very wet and windy, but it's a great place to shop and people watch!
It is true that Auckland is expensive to live in, but I think that's only if you want to live close to the city centre. There is a train route that goes from the city centre and south, and also a ferry that goes around the harbours. There are some really nice areas across the harbour from the Auckland city centre, such as Davenport and Albany. Generally a very sunny area, but if you're wanting a laidback sort of town, Auckland probably isn't the one for you.
Christchurch is ideal if you like the cold, and want access to snow/surf. It's close to the mountains (I think about 4 hours drive from Queenstown) and not far from the ocean if you're a surfer. It's the sister city to Adelaide, Australia, and it's the biggest city in the South Island. A very pretty city, and everyone I know there has fallen in love with it.
That covers the three main cities. I think as long as you have a full time job, it is usually relatively easy to get residency here. Or you could just get married ;)
Check out a website like TradeMe for accommodation or in the Flatmates Wanted section to find a place to live in if you're interested in having housemates.
As for jobs, check out TradeMe or Seek for a job in the particular area you're after. |

I live in Dunedin, and I love it here for its slower pace.
Queenstown is beautiful, the adventure capital of NZ. It would be a good place to work in the tourism sector, but accomadation will take a big chunk of your wages. |

Hi Barbara, I am Chris from Christchurch ,New Zealand, I read your question in yahoo. Well I would recommend Christchurch is the best city for u to live in New Zealand.
The reasons , Christchurch is not so big not so small and has international airport, and jobs.
IF u live in big city it is very expensive to live, u may have to travel long distance for job ,and not much saftey.
If u live in small city ,there may be not many jobs, u can be bored,u have to come to big cities to buy stuff.
Christchurch is perfect match , u dont have to travel so long to get to jobs, rents and stuff and not very expensive ,and plenty of jobs, and is the best city i would say, |

It depends on how big of a town you want to live in....I personally like Christchurch....its the largest city in the South Island and is one of the main tourist places ( which would be Auckland, Rotorua, Christchurch and Queenstown)....it would be cheaper living I think than both Auckland and Queenstown...I don't know much about Rotorua ( apaprt from the smell!)....there are other towns that have a strong tourist basis but these are the main ones.
It depends on what type of living you want to do..THe South Island is prettier than the north, but has less people. There is good access to ski areas from christchurch as well, the mountains and the beaches.
Look up on something like seek.co.nz for some options on jobs or trademe.co.nz ( under the job section) and see what and where the main jobs are. You could always move to somewhere else if you are not happy and you might find other people who have experiences in other places that might suit you. |

Wellington or Queenstown, for different reasons, Wellington is the best city, google it, and Queenstown good for tourism, if you want to be amongst other travellers.
Christchurch is a definite NO, it's voted the worst city in the country, very flat, boring, long way from good ski resorts, beaches aren't so nice, very average...I could go on but I wont, just don't live there.
Again I'm from Dunedin, also average for a tourist. |

Why limit yourself to considering only cities?
There are heaps of towns and settlements to live in that don't have the disadvantages that cities have that are worth considering.
Everywhere from Lake Moeraki to The Chateau would want to employ someone with your credentials.
However, these places may also have their own disadvantages.
But give it some thought. |
