They are definitley worse off in Australia.

In NZ the Maoris are enjoying more benefits than the rest of the posulation like free university education, special voting rights. There are even talks about setting up a special court system for them. If anything then here the situation has tipped the oter way where they have a better situation than the rest of us.

Now its better for Maori than it was in the 19th century and for much of the 20th. In the 19th it was expected Maori would die out and in the 20th it was expected Maori would assimilate. And in theory Maori are equal. There are still the left over problems of colonial occupation to deal with such as poor health, poor self esteem, low achievement rates, high incarceration rates, alcohol and drug abuse. In all these areas Maori have higher than average problem rates. But NZ has already had a Maori Governor-General (roughly equivalent to President but largely ceremonial) and has many prominent and highly esteemed Maori Citizens. Its not unusual any more to see a Maori in a suit holding a good job in business.

I don't know so much about Australia, but for most of their History with the Eurpoeans, Maori have done much better becasue they were more respected by the colonial system and were better at sticking up for themselves. In the 1970s and 1980s the Native Australians were still being shot at random in the Outback and smashed over by Police in Queensland.

BUT, Australia has come a long way very quickly. And at the moment they are doing very well when it comes to trying to solve the problems of the indigenous people. But there is a legacy of bitterness which will last a very long time and they still have a lot of work to do.

On the whole I think Maori are still in a better position, and their rights to ownership of certain resources and lands has already been settled to the satisfaction of many in the current generations. What the future brings will depend on how future generations see the reality of their times.

Maori are treated more equally than Aborigines - sometimes it feels like they are getting treated better by the government because of things that happened ages ago.
I'm not complaining or anything, it's great that we are all being treated equally. I just feel like the government is trying to hard.

Anyways, the Aborigines have it worse, its much harder for them to be treated equally than it is for the Maori.

the Aborigines definitely are, they have very little rights, or so it seems, many live in dire situations, and the education they are getting is way below par, opportunities for work etc are not as available s here where Maori have many opportunities and get treated the same.

Aussies... they get neglected at least here the Maoris get wellfair..

To be honest, Maori have more rights in NZ.

Australia. Maoris are treated equally, the Aborigines get treated unfairly but as far as government assistance, Australia is better off. Maybe that's why the situation is, the way it is. Aborigines have had a hard slog, unlike the maoris.....I dunno.

But that is on a very general level, if you zoom in a bit to how we interact with each other and the other cultures of this world you wouldn't even think about it. It's a government issue, not a culture issue I feel.

Aborigine.

Maori might as well be treated like royalty.

Dont know a lot about the Australian situation as i have never been there, as for the N.Z. Maori i think they are treated as equals by the general population, politically there are a few that have been riding the gravy train and i doubt if that will ever end in my lifetime,

The maoris get treated better but everytime i turn the tv on someones complaining about land or the sea or the lake and who owns what; its a joke, this isnt 1800 anymore its 2009 and "New Zealand" owns it not the maoris.
