My friend and I visited NZ for a month last November, which was late Spring. The weather in general was warm but changeable...a sudden shower would appear out of nowhere. This was especially true in Dunedin.
Since I live in the Washington DC aream what's warm for me might feel cool to you.
Be sure and bring a waterproof jacket that you can layer over your other clothes for warmth or wind if necessary.
If you're going to stay in a hostel, I highly recomment the Central Backpackers. It's veryconvenient, clean, and friendly.
http://www.hostelz.com/hostel/15808-Dunedin-Central-Backpackers-%28DCB%29. Don't stay at Upstairs Backpackers unless you are a night owl...it's located on top of the noisiest night club in Dunedin and the hostel walls vibrate it's so loud.
You will LOVE Dunedin! It's compact and easy to get around in...their buses are great! Be sure to rent a car and drive out to the Otago Peninsula. The drive is lovely, and you can visit the only place in the world that protects yellowbilled penguins, and an albatross preserve (albatrosses have a wingspan of way over 2 meters!). I walked along a beach and discovered a sleeping walrus less than 3 meters away...it was amazing.
Have fun planning your trip! |

Our winter here will normally be windy, sunny, and around 0 to 10 degrees Celsius - that would be May to early September. After that, the weather is very changesome, but warmer (up to 20 degrees). The summers are about 15 to 25 degrees most days, and can have the odd rainy day. Autumn is probably the best time to visit, between February and May, with sunny and dry weather, and temperatures of 10 to 25 degrees (don't be surprised to experience the odd storm or frost, they do occur, too). |

If you want summer weather, go during your winter. And vice versa, just don't expect too much warmth. NZ is still pretty far south. |

It isn't the temperature that is going to get you, it is the dampness. I'm from Toronto and I looked at the average temperature of Toronto and figured I could handle it. I was wrong. It is that cold that gets through to your bones.
One other thing to be aware of is that a lot of the places don't have central heating, meaning that when it is 3 degrees outside, it will be 3 degrees in your living room. There are some things to help with that problem (fire places, heaters etc.) but that is the situation.
Saying all that, it is still worth the visit. Dunedin is an amazing city at any time of year. You just have to dress in lots of layers and be prepared for the cold. |
