try www.nakedbus.com, it goes direct from Dunners to Invers, not the scenic way, try the tutara backpackers for accom, in the city centre www.tuataralodge.co.nz

Try the Bottom Bus. It takes you door to door and goes along the Southern Scenic Route, which is much more interesting than State Highway 1.

There is a direct bus that goes overnight.
Probably leaves Dunedin about midnight.
It's called Night Rider and you can check out full details at their site.
www.knightrider.co.nz/

Going by this overnight bus could see you saving a night's accommodation.
