Why does New Zealand have daylight saving?

In the summer New Zealanders move their clocks forward by one hour meaning that it doesn't get dark until 9 pm. But why only here in NZ and Australia?

So we can enjoy the summer evenings. I think that other countries do it too. Some places in QLD don't do it. They voted on it about 15 years ago and decided against it. I like it, except when we lose an hours sleep going back!

most countries in the world do some parts of australia dont like brisbane because the sun already rises at 5 in the morning and sets at 9:30 at night

The practice can be controversial.Adding daylight to afternoons benefits retailing, sports, and other activities that exploit sunlight after working hours, but causes problems for farming, entertainment and other occupations tied to the sun. Extra afternoon daylight reduces traffic fatalities; its effect on health and crime is less clear. An early goal of DST was to reduce evening usage of incandescent lighting, formerly a primary use of electricity; changes in usage patterns have cast doubt on whether Day light Saving Time now saves energy.

In Europe we do the same since a long time.

It isnt only in NZ and Aus, its most countries.

Canada and the usa does it too

As people have stated, alot of countries have DST.
It moves an extra hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. It does NOT increase or decrease the total number of daylight hours.
New Zealand is permanently on 30 minutes of daylight saving. It was a wartime measure introduced many years ago. This puts NZ standard time at GMT + 12 hours exactly.
Then during the summer months - October to March, an extra hour is added making a total of 1 hour, 30 minutes.

I know it also happens in the UK...but its actually longer there too!!
It so we go out more and use less power...hence the name daylight savings as the days are longer and whatnot...

Most countries outside the tropics have daylight saving. Near the Equator there's so little difference in the hours of daylight between summer and winter that it isn't worth the hassle, but in Europe, North America, Aussie and NZ, studies have shown that daylight saving reduces the road toll because driving at night is more dangerous than in daytime, it reduces power consumption because the extra power used in the morning is more than compensated for by the reduction in the evening and, well, long summer evenings are nice. About the only groups who are seriously inconvenienced are livestock farmers and jewellers who sell clocks.
