Why is Auckland so.... un-lively?

I do not mean to come across as a snob or anything but I'm currently on holidays in Queensland and everything is so bright! Here on the Gold Coast the weather is always sunny, the people are very attractive and there is an abundence of things to do! I went to Wet 'n' wild the other day and it was great! Heaps of teens out enjoying the sun. Why can we not have this in Auckland? I mean, how hard is it to stick a water theme park somewhere. Perhaps on the North Shore. Our city has everything going for it, it just needs a few touch ups is all. Teenagers of Auckland, what do you think they should build for the city to be more fun than it is? I am seriously considering emailing the city council and suggesting some ideas. Don't get me wrong, I love Auckland and don't plan to leave it soon but it could be an even better place. Whose with me?

Everything you have mentioned is kids stuff and weather. Soon you will
be all grown up and theme parks will have no attraction for you.

I'm all for improving Auckland, and I think a big part of the problem is access to these nice places. Waiwera's great but it's too hard to get too, think of just how much of a pain in the **** it is to get to. Auckland needs to sort out transport/roading and fix some of the poorly planned out suburbs. Better roads and some other options such as ferries or rail/trams. The road networks and suburbs are much better planned out in Sydney, Melbourne and even most of Brisbane and the Gold coast. Okay once the suburbs are built it's too much to rip them up but they could at least do something and people in Auckland need more of a community spirit not so focused on their property value

Take a look at Manly in Sydney, fantastic beach that most people take the FERRY to! Auckland has some beaches nice enough, how about plan for people and local lifestyles instead of real estate speculation.

And that doesn't just go for beaches, but for attractions and nightlife and the rest.

Feel free to ignore me, just my two cents Jaffas. I don't like your city but I sincerely think that if it was run better I could love it.

Whats wrong with Waiwera and Parakai or even Rainbows End? How can you complain about what we have in Auckland? We've got Kelly Toltarns, we've got Point Erin, the reason why we probably won't have anymore than what we already have is because the council do not want to spend money on theme parks that won't get used that often. We as a country are admired for being natural and not amongg the rat race of the rest of the worldd. We don't need theme parks.. Most teenagers nowa days prefer to hang out at the movies, local skate parks or just with friends.. Everything we have is nothing like the rest of the world, I'd like to see it stay that way..

NZBR Tours
I agree 100%. We need more attractions in Auckland!

Check out Wairewa Pools just north of Auckland.

Sorry have to disagree.

As mentioned above, Auckland has many many attractions. You just have to know where to look. Auckland is not a city that is based around it's CBD. In fact, I'd have to say that the CBD is dying a gradual death, but with occasional life-sparing injections.

If you come into Auckland as a visitor, it must look like a small place with one or two office blocks and lots of boring two-laned motorways.

But you need to get under its skin to get to know the real Auckland; the one that the locals appreciate.

You mentioned pools, well each Council has several of its own public pools. Apart from the ones already mentioned, try West Wave Aquatic Centre, or Panmure Swimarama or Mt Albert Aquatic Centre to name a few.

You compare Auckland unfairly to Queensland. Queensland (an entire state) prides itself on Dreamworld and Wet 'n WIld...
If every state/city in the world had Dreamworld and Wet'nWild, then it wouldn't be original in Queensland would it.

What Auckland has, that (Queensland has too) is a beautiful harbour with many islands to visit for free and mostly without permit. But what Auckland has that Queensland doesn't is: sea water that is free of poisonous snakes, poisonous fish and poisonous sea creatures. Plus it's free of cyclones most years. OK, so you can only swim in Auckland's ocean during the short Dec-Apr season, but at least you can do it without worrying about standing on a deadly creature.

Sometimes un-lively is an advantage.

Go ahead and put forward some suggestions to the council if you feel passionately. However, many theme parks aren't owned by city councils, and if one were to be built, chances are you'd be over it by the time construction was completed. They aren't just "stuck" somewhere, they take time! I come from Hawke's Bay (where we had Splash Planet), and most teens were more likely to go to the local beaches rather than the theme park because it's a novelty that gets old very quickly.

However, Auckland is a constantly expanding city so there's always a possibility of something like that happening one day, but at this moment I think the city of Auckland is focusing on ways to attract tourists with the rugby world upgrades and so on. Just stick to what it has like Snow Planet etc.

I agree with what the person before me said though, eventually you will grow up and be over all of that stuff. I am a teenager, but just over all of that stuff. I've done all of the Gold Coast theme parks, Tokyo Disneyland, and of course local NZ ones like Rainbow's End and Splash Planet. I want to try out other Disneylands but once again, it's a novelty that gets old!
