I agree with Dookie, Murphy, and Dangerous. Our young see the flash, the bling, and totally forget their own culture. In NZ, I am saddened why this is because not only do they give up on their Samoan-ness, they give up on being Kiwi. When i visit my brother in Waterview, I see it slowly getting there....the bling, the flash, the "americanism". NZ (&OZ) have heaps of opportunity for PIs. Try to find anything at that level here in the US. I see my state-side brethern going for that quick rich stuff (bangin, dealin, scammin, etc.) I tell them that you can take poly courses at the University in Auckland....and they are shocked!! (and they think they are "keepin it real"). My african brethern come from a great history full of struggle here in america, yet they find our PI culture inviting because it is based on family. The concepts of food, sacrifice, church, and way of life, saddens me when we lose out to the streets, or even to other cultures. Our culture has to be our saving grace. |

...because in the U.S. (at least California) they tend to live in predominantly Black areas. I wish there were more Samoans in the U.S. because they get along with us better than other ethnicities.
They embrace their own culture, but it's true that many of them wear cornrows, afros, listen to hip-hop, and breed with African-Americans. They're cool as hell!! |
