I've answered someone else's question which is similar to this one. I've quoted a NZ website http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/overseasdrivers/

It states that if your license isn't in English you'll need an international license or an english translation so our police people can read it... make sense, eh!?

So, if your friend's license is in English, or they have an English translation then they can drive in NZ.

I dont really understand what you are asking nor have you said from which country you come. However, in general you need to be at least 25 years old to hire a vehicle in New Zealand. Companies will often reduce this to 21 but will charge you extra fees. rRenters will normally need to have either an international drivers licence or a valid licence from the country in which they normally drive. A number of companies will also insist that you have held your drivers licence for at least one year. If the above doesnt answer your question perhaps you could repost or add a comment explaining exactly what you need to know and which country you and your friend come from.
