If you are here on holiday you will have a good time. If you take in a few tours you will have the chance to meet people. If you stay at a backpackers hostel you will always make friends. There is a lot to see and take in. Some of the places are just so beautiful that they really are best enjoyed in peace. You should get back safely if you are sensible. Hitchhiking still happens but I wouldn't recommend it. Some tourists have been murdered in the past and they were hitching. No more dangerous than any other country.
